Book Buying Bans and Written in Books

Hi everyone! I just moved back into my apartment in Chicago. I feel like all I ever write about here is moving, work and school, but I guess that's pretty much been what my life has been like the past few months.
I missed my weekly update post on Friday, so here's the past week, a little late but better than nothing!

The start of September meant the start of Brave New World. My friend Kirsten and I had decided to take a crack at reading BNW and 1984 back to back and dove right in. I finished Brave New World yesterday will be calling Kirst to discuss our thoughts and draft up a review later today. As you probably gathered, next on my list is 1984. I got a copy for Christmas that I know my parents bought from half.com. I was cool with it because I've gotten tons of completely readable books from them at great prices. When I realized I was about to finish Brave New World last night I went looking for said copy. What I found can only be described as a tragedy to books everywhere. Now i don't have an issue with writing in books, but every single page of my copy of 1984 is underlined, boxed, crossed out, and showered in stupid notes and sad faces. I can usually put up with most underlining, I like to see what other people found striking when they were reading, but this was way out of hand. Do you write in or underline things in books you own?  I'd love to hear other peoples thoughts on this subject because I know to some it is a huge taboo.

Lastly, my self imposed book buying band is going terribly.
Since my last post I went over the deep end. I got 6 books this past week. They were -

I obviously had to get a new copy of 1984, and since I know I'll be reading this immediately I am not as upset about it. I already own a copy of Wuthering Heights, but have been in love with this edition for over a year.

My excuses for these two? I had a gift card and there are few places to hang out in my hometown besides the local Barnes and Noble
I got both of these on a discount, but I don't need either of them. Regardless, I'm super excited to read How Did You Get This Number. I loved Sloane Crosley's other book, I Was Told There'd Be Cake.

I also had to buy school books this week and spent an obscene amount of money on used copies. I am determin to get back on wagon and use lots of metaphor's to signal me not buying any more books.

Hi, My name is Sarah and I'm a book addict. I buy books I don't need and don't have time to read. I will do better. I will go to the library.

I'm sorry about the lack of blog action lately, I should be back to normal blogging and commenting around Thursday.

Happy Labor Day

When I was about four and had just learned to write my name, my mom caught me practicing in the back of one of my Dr. Seuss books. She made it quite clear that we never, ever write in books, and I took that to heart. Since then, the only time I ever, ever write in a book is if it's a non-fiction book and it has blank pages in the back--I will write down the parts that stand out or that I want to remember, so that I don't have to read the book again later--I can just re-read my notes. Other than that, writing in books just seems sacrilegious!

I love that cover of Wuthering Heights -- but since I don't really like the book and already own a copy I won't be buying it. I never write in my books now--but I did when I was in school. Now I find notes and sticky notes are so much more useful.

I don't ever underline or write anything in a book -- I usually plan to swap it out or give it away. Sounds like you got a college kid's book, huh? Bummer that it was graffitied up like that. :(

And I don't think I could have not bought the Wuthering Heights book -- what a splendid and whimsical cover, I love it!

I never underline either, but they usually don't bother me anyway. I like reading 'read' books myself.

Great finds.

Looking forward to your review of Brave New World. I have been meaning to read it for quite some time. It's been sitting on my shelf for ages. Looking forward to your review of 1984. So. Good. Your newly purchased edition of Wuthering Heights is just gorgeous! Enjoy! :)

Landed over here from crazy for books. I love that cover of wuthering heights and have been resisting buying it for so long now - it's a minor miracle that every time i nearly do i'm able to remind myself that i've owned a different edition of it for about 15 years now. (and still have yet to finish it.)

as far as underlining goes, this used to drive me nuts, but since i started to like doing it (marking favorite passages, mostly) i like, sometimes, to see how other people mark their own books. it can be interesting to see how people progress through books and how your thoughts compared, though i'm admittedly not too thrilled when i buy a book and find it's littered with notes. (but even this can be interesting sometimes, right? take my copy of "mice & men" in which every curse is scribbled out...)

I can never underline, write or highlight in my books. That is my worst nightmare! I really want to read Brave New World and 1984. That's two classics that I should read. Great post!
